TOD HOLTON SUPER GREEN BERET is a wonderful comic from the mid-60s about a young boy who magically changes into a super-powerful adult. Yes, it's CAPTAIN MARVEL in Viet Nam, only with incomprehensible stories, terrible artwork, and patronizing political subtext!

Old wizard in cave? Check. Red sweater, white shirt, teenager? Check. Iron-jawed, two-fisted hero a propaganda tool in the war against Communism? Check and double check!

Apparently the mission parameters of the Green Berets include going back in time and fighting the Redcoats. I don't think this is what Kennedy had in mind.
Oh, you're skeptical about "Lightning Comics" and their desire to rip off Captain Marvel? This is a house ad for their other comic, FATMAN THE HUMAN FLYING SAUCER.

Not only does "Fatman" have Captain Marvel's outfit, he's even drawn by C.C. Beck! Why not give him a talking tiger friend and have him fight a super-intelligent worm while you're at it?

And if you had any doubts about their CAPTAIN MARVEL envy, check THIS out. "Captain Shazam"... yeah, right. You'll be hearing from my attorney in the morning.

Just a legend? If only he was, Lieutenant Squinty. If only he was.
