Sure, McDonalds is one of the world's largest corporations and can only serve the McRib at intervals because there aren't enough pigs in the world to supply every restaurant. But didja know that their corporate mascot Ronald McDonald is a comic book star?
Well, okay, "star" is pushing it. This IS Charlton Comics we're talking about, where "stardom" is defined by Bobby Sherman or the Many Ghosts Of Doctor Graves. But Ronald starred in his very own comic book for a few minutes there in the 70s!
Ronald's just a regular guy who wears a clown suit and a red wig and hangs out in the neighborhood joining in the wagon races. Perfectly normal.
Sometimes he invites the kids to sporting events! Such a nice fellow - you can tell he's a nice guy by his stiff, unchanging body posture.
He's so beloved by children that they refer to him as "uncle". Or maybe this is one of those Donald Duck "uncle" deals. We know the score, Ronald.
One thing's for sure, that Ronald sure gets into trouble! Luckily nothing says "concern" like "OOH - NO."
NOT IF I SEE YOU FIRST, YOU HIDEOUS, CRINKLY-EYED FREAK!!
Charlton wasn't the only publisher to render this hamburger mascot into comic book form. In the mid 1970s the groundbreaking British weekly 2000 A.D. sent star character Judge Dredd on a journey across the atomic wasteland of 22nd Century America. And what did Judge Dredd find? Battling armies of fast food franchise employees!
McDonalds - or rather, their lawyers - had a quick word with 2000 A.D., and the Battle Of The Burger Barons ended with a quick cease-fire. And who can blame them? Ronald McDonald as a crazed whip-wielding atomic mutant flanked by shotgun-blasting soda jerks? What's not to like?
Thanks to thrill-power expert "G.G." for the 2000 A.D. scans!!
