AREBA KOALA is the charming story of a koala bear named Areba and his girlfriend, a penguin named Kep. Coming straight out of the San Francisco proto-furry post-underground "groundlevel" comics scene of the mid 1970s, AREBA KOALA differs from other examples of the scene like, say, ELFQUEST or CEREBUS, in that it did not spawn fandoms and successful publishing careers, and also in that it frequently makes no sense whatsoever.
Most of the stories in this comic are one-page gag strips that could have come right out of "Family Circus" or "Peanuts", except for the part about the penguin with the gigantic false eyelashes who dates outside her species.
Another distinguishing characteristic of AREBA KOALA is that it takes place in a world where koala bears and penguins not only inhabit the same geographical locations, but they do so surrounded by regular human beings in a regular human being city, which leads to some frankly bizarre contrasts in cartooning styles.
This is wrong on so many levels, I don't even know where to begin.
Here's an interesting twist where a cartoon penguin purchases a very realistic stuffed iguana so that her boyfriend can use it as a model, for when he draws a comic strip about his girlfriend purchasing a stuffed iguana so that her boyfriend can use it as a model, for when.... AUUUGUGHGUHGHG
Everyone who loves koalas and penguins? Why, that's ME! Awwwwww.
And with batting eyelashes and Chuck Bronson swirling in our bathtubs, we bid AREBA KOALA adieu. Farewell Areba and Kep! May the herring and the eucalyptus leaves never clash in your meals!
