From the dim recesses of the 1970s comes SUPERKIDS, a free educational comic published by the Office Of Energy Conservation of the Department Of Energy, Mines, and Resources of Canada and charmingly illustrated by Don Inman!

The Superkids are Kevin and Judy, who found a magic rock that gives them energetic super-powers that enable them to highlight issues facing Canadians concerning matters of energy conservation with regards to consumer usage in their homes and workplaces as per section 876 of the Departmental Memorandum published on or around 5 October 1975!

You'll notice Kevin kind of looks like Harry Potter.

That's right, remember in 1986 when we ran out of gasoline?! This is EXACTLY the kind of doom-and-gloom scaremongering that led an entire generation to dismiss the conservation movement as a bunch of crackpots. Turns out the conservationists are right, but that doesn't make anybody feel any better.

Because Science has NOTHING BETTER TO DO than TELL KEVIN WHAT TO EAT.

Luckily most cities adopted the blue recycling boxes, completely avoiding the need for giant smelly whirlwinds of garbage. As attractive as that might sound.

Curious as to what the future holds for energy conservation, the Superkids fly east really fast and go forward in time. Because that's how time works, the Earth rotates and makes time happen. Obviously this comic is about conservation, not physics.

So it's cold and dark and people are out of work, and there isn't any public transportation. And the air is polluted and the streets are dirty. Not so much "1996" as it is "Detroit".

But if we're using energy, then that's the opposite of conserving it, so it's impossible to both use and conserve energy at the same time, and... oh, never mind.

Kevin doesn't seem too concerned about the country's problems because Kevin is TWELVE. Chill, Dad. The country isn't going anywhere.
