SHOJO AMERICAN STYLE

Dateline 1970 - 16 MAGAZINE's spinoff mag SPEC is not just your one-stop destination for Bobby Sherman photos, the secret loves of Jack Wild, and dreamy pix of the Cowsills boys with their shirts off! It's also home to A GIRL NAMED JOEY, a black and white girls comic by the one and only unsigned Ernie Colon!

Even though Ernie was deep in the Harvey trenches at this time, he wasn't letting Little Dot cramp his drawin' hand. In fact his art here has a lot in common with the girls comics we'd see coming out of Japan in years to come.

Colon's confident pen line and swanlike figure work is a 180 degree turn from his Richie Rich comics. Imagine if this sort of work had taken off with American readers in 1970 - maybe girls would have kept reading comics without a thirty year interim, waiting for somebody to print something they might like.

How long did this strip run? Did 16 run any other girls comics? Is there an entire subset of Teen Magazine Comics waiting for some obsessive fan to discover, index, catalog, and fake up a inflated price guide for? Does Susan Cowsill really want me to spend the summer with her in Newport, Rhode Island? Only the editors of 16 Magazine know for sure!
